Galveston Just Listed
| Galveston island was
originally inhabited by members of the Karankawa and Akokisa
tribes. The Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca was shipwrecked
on the island in 1528 and there began his famous trek to
Mexico. In the late 1600s, the French explorer Robert
Cavelier de La Salle claimed the area for Louis XIV and
named it Saint-Louis.
